What are they......
Gundog Working Tests (GWT's) for Spaniels and Retrievers are competitions to assess the working abilities and training standard of gundogs in a 'lets pretend' scenario without live game or shooting.
Spaniels are judged on their hunting ability and their control. They will also be asked to retrieve dummies on command to hand. With 3 different classes, Puppy, Novice and Open (Spaniel & Retriever), the actual level of discipline and requirements for each class will be set by the two Judges on the day. There is often a water test which dogs will be asked to retrieve a dummy with confidence and deliver to hand.
However, Retrievers are normally judged by 4 Judges. Your Retriever will be required to be steady to shot and fall and must retrieve only on command. Ideally your dog should be tested walking up as well as in water. Your dog must walk steadily to heel.
Good marking is imperative with a speedy pick-up and fast return to the Handler.
